About Richard

Richard has over 25 years experience in the licensed retail sector, having sold his award winning pub The Court Jester in Southampton in 2011 to concentrate on his training business which he setup in 2000.

Richard left school at the age of 15 with 11 CSE qualifications, having no idea about what sort of career he wanted, he held various roles within the retail sector, at 18 Richard took up a part time job with a local pub as a barman to see if this sort of work would be interesting.

At 19 Richard was working for a nightclub in his hometown of Maidstone in Kent, he worked their for 2 years.

For the next 4 years he worked for a company in Kent, as their uk sales director. at 25 he was approached by a company in Bristol, who were looking for a pub manager to work throughout their estate of pubs and clubs within the South of England, after successfully managing 4 of their outlets he finally moved to Southampton where he decided to stay.

In September 1998 Richard together with his business partner Paul Shinar purchased the Tut & Shive in Southampton from Whitbread Plc, who were disposing of some of their outlets.

The pub was a  run down city centre venue with a chequered past, the building was built in 1834 as a hotel, and changed to a pub in the 1970's, in the early 80's it became a nightclub until 1989 when is had its public entertainments licence revoked and closed down for a brief time until being purchased by Whitbread in 1991 to become one of their Tut & Shive themed pubs.

After being purchased by Richard & Paul in 1998, the pub had a 150,000 refit, and was a popular venue with both students and the local community. Serving Great Food and offering lots of Live Entertainment and Special events.

In January 2000 Richard formed Act 2003 Training Ltd together with his manager Suzanne Badham after discovering that the nearest training centre was based in Portsmouth and was approved by the British Institute of Innkeeping to conduct their range of licensing qualifications.

Over the last 14 years he has continued to expand the companies portfolio of courses to cover licensing law, drugs awareness and food hygiene

In 2001 he was involved with the training and development of staff at the new 32,000 capacity Southampton football club stadium and continues to offer training and consultancy to some of the uk's biggest companies such as:

Luminar Leisure PLC - Whitbread PLC - Holiday Inns - Marriot Group - First Leisure - Costa Coffee - David Lloyd Leisure to name but a few.

Richard has also worked with a number of companies offering bespoke training packages for staff development. and has been involved in some large outside events offering assistance on legal matters as well as staff training to ensure the smooth running of their event.

Richard was also Chairman of Southampton Licensing Link, which he was asked to setup in 2000 along with Hampshire Constabulary and Southampton City Council, to offer a radio link to over 50 pubs and clubs across the city centre to help control and deter violent and disorderly conduct within the late night economy. The scheme was an instant massive success and Richard ran the scheme as chairman for 11 years until 2011 when he sold his pub.

As Part of his role as chairman Richard also had an active role within several action groups in the city such as:

Operation Viper, Night Link, Street Pastors & Safer Streets Partnership

These groups were setup in conjunction with Hampshire Constabulary and Southampton City Council to deal with the issues surrounding violence and disorder within the city.
